Outages caused by Hurricane Xavier did not cause major damage to ENERGA Operator’s assets

ENERGA Operator is completing the process of renewing service following the mass outages caused by the hurricane and blizzards in the company’s operational area (1/4 of Poland’s landmass). According to initial estimates, although the outages were widespread they did not cause any major damage to the company’s assets.

The company anticipates that the outages in the medium voltage lines caused by the awful weather conditions will be repaired by tonight. The malfunctions in low voltage lines reported by customers are being rectified.

We are aware how burdensome the lack of electricity is to customers, especially if the interruption of supply lasts from almost one day to several days” says Rafał Czyżewski, CEO of Energa-Operator. “The company’s employees and associates engaged in this process have arduously endeavored to reinstate electricity supply to our customers’ homes as quickly as possible. I would like to express my recognition to all of them and I would like to assure our customers that we will continue to streamline our operations and enhance our grid’s resilience to extreme weather conditions”.

At its peak (on Friday, 6 December around 5 p.m.) roughly 300 thousand customers (of a total of nearly 3 million customers) did not have power. That same night we repaired approximately one-half of the outages. On Saturday (7 December) power was reinstated to more than 90% of the customer’s clients affected by the hurricane.

Every day some 400 crews consisting of several persons (approximately 1,200 people) supported by external firms were working in the field. The power dispatching staffing was doubled and the number of employees manning the call center was increased. Even though the company has 600 telephone lines in two call centers, the waiting time to handle incoming calls became more protracted faced with approximately 200 incoming calls per minute. The company therefore launched a facility to submit reports by e-mail.

Preliminary estimates indicate that although the outages were widespread they did not cause major damage to the company’s assets, compared, for instance, to the destruction recorded in November 2011. One obstacle we faced in restoring power supply more quickly was the restricted mobility of our repair crews linked to the prevailing conditions on the roads (local and forest roads) in the wake of the hurricane and blizzards.
