Energa Group RES power plants – Brąswałd Hydroelectric Power Plant

Energa provides an overview of all the RES power plants under its management. Renewable energy sources are an integral part of the Energa Group's strategy for the years 2016 to 2025. Energa is a national leader in this respect. At the beginning of 2020, renewable energy sources account for over 30% of the Group's production mix.

Energa owns 46 hydroelectric power plants, five wind farms and two photovoltaic farms. The total capacity of these power plants is 444 MW. The Company continues to expand its onshore wind farms, implements photovoltaic projects and, as a long-term project, plans to build offshore wind farms. In April 2019, work began on the construction of the Przykona Wind Farm with a capacity of 30 MW. The project is scheduled to be completed and the occupancy permit obtained in the second quarter of 2020.

Background

The Brąswałd Hydroelectric Power Plant was built on a canal dug in 1934, which connected the Łyna River and three lakes: Mosąg, Śledzinek and Orzołek. The digging of the canal shortened the river and made it possible to bypass a lot of bends, thanks to which it was possible to dam up the water to a height of 8.7 m. In the years 1935 and 1936, a concrete bridge and a weir were built. The construction of the power plant building began in 1936. Electricity production was launched in 1937. During the Second World War, the power plant was not damaged and it resumed operation in June 1945.

Two Kaplan turbines are installed in the open chambers of the engine room and drive two synchronous generators with a total capacity of 2160 KW. In the years 2003 and 2004, the control and protection circuits for the operation of the generators were upgraded. Since then, thanks to the possibility of remote monitoring of the equipment operation parameters, the power plant has not required any permanent presence of technical personnel.

Hydroelectric power plants are an important element in the electricity generation chain in the Energa Group. They are constantly upgraded and overhauled, which maintains their energy efficiency at a very high level.
