New source of heat in Ostrołęka

The Energa Group has launched a new source of heat for Ostrołęka. Thanks to construction of a modern installation, part of the Ostrołęka Power Plant has started to produce heat in addition to electricity. Supply of heat for the city will be now more environmentally-friendly and financially more efficient.

The new source of heat for Ostrołęka uses a heat accumulator, one of the few devices of this type in Poland. The installation constructed in the baseload power plant makes it possible to co-generate heat together with electricity. The accumulator stores the increased heat production outside the periods of peak demand for electricity and ensures continuity of heat supply. Application of this solution has made it possible to combine the supply of heat to the city and production of electricity for the National Power System.

The new source of heat will replace the Ostrołęka cogeneration plant, which has been supplying the city with heat for nearly seventy years. The installation ensures optimum utilization of both types of energy generated in the Power Plant and higher efficiency of the heat collection system, thanks to which Power Plant is more environmentally-friendly and at the same time economically more efficient.

The Ostrołęka A Cogeneration Plant, being gradually decommissioned, was built in the 1950s. Together with the Ostrołęka B Power Plant, which is of strategic significance for supply of electricity in north-eastern Poland, it makes up the company under the name Energa Elektrownie Ostrołęka. The cogeneration plant being decommissioned generates electricity and heat for industrial and municipal customers from the city of Ostrołęka. Its full shut-down will take place in 2015. Construction of the new installation in the Ostrołęka B Power Plant started in July 2012. It has better energy efficiency and lower CO2 emissions and already supplies heat for the inhabitants of Ostrołęka.
